The antivax belief system and the "wellness culture" it comes out of is based on a falsehood created by modern medicine - the idea that the natural state of the human body is "wellness", that health is our birthright, and that sickness is an alien and abnormal intrusionhttps://twitter.com/lynsautigers/status/1334720273984131072 …

Nope!! Unlike us, they watched diseases like smallpox & polio devastate their loved ones for generations, not just a few months. Modern medicine has spoiled us. Hell, remember, antibiotics were still experimental less than 100 years ago.

The truth is that it's completely normal to be sick, miserable and in pain, it's completely normal to die "early", it's completely normal for life to suck Any improvement on that state was caused by people doing something about it

It is extremely frustrating watching antivaxers and TERFs pop off about letting "nature take its course" because "the human body knows what it's doing" As though it wouldn't be the most natural thing in the world for them to have died at the age of two of infectious disease

As one of the five out of nine babies their mother bore who died before they were old enough to talk Before she also keeled over in her 60s from the stress her nine pregnancies exerted on her body, at what was considered a ripe old age for the time

Ah, so, you mean we didn’t gain immunity from such diseases simply because we “bathe more” now (and yep, one of their “arguments”)?! 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

Hadn't thought of it that way before🤔. Nature may be invested in "life" -- but not necessarily *yours*. So in a way the world is a courtroom, nature is the unbiased judge who doesn't really care who wins - you or the disease; medicine is the lawyer, advocating on your behalf

The earth will survive without humans. We can’t survive without the earth. Ignorance or not liking or believing in a pandemic or disease does not make it go away. Humans either learn to live with science, facts, and nature or destroy it, bringing new diseases and climate crises.

It's not so much that modern medicine created the falsehood, but it made a window where you didn't have to be in pain and didn't have to die and people thought it was normal. It's also a bit generational because if you knew anyone with polio, you're not going to be antivax

The really sad thing is, this is living memory. My dad, who is 83, tells stories about the Dallas Health Dept. putting quarantine notices on doors. He had scarlet fever. It's not like there's not people around to correct this BS.

There are also a ton of people (like me) who are really only alive now thanks to medical advancements of the last 100 or so years. If I were born in 188X instead of 198X I'd probably have died of malnutrition before ever having the chance to die of anemia.
