Like it's the one mode you get lectured that you MUST NOT DO, because it's so intrusive and presumptuous and mindfucking for the reader, and everyone hates having to slog through a narrative that uses it And I'm like, my whole giant shelf of CYOA books would disagree

If anything all the stuff they say about why 2nd-person present-tense is bad is what I find refreshing about it It's *honest* Yes, the book is directly telling you what to think and what to imagine and whose shoes to put yourself in All books do that, how could they not

That's what I find amusing about it, serious writers being like "No one can take it seriously when the book directly tells you 'You are suddenly overwhelmed with grief' That's so arrogant for an author to say" I'm like, nah, it's awesome, actually, you just gotta get my buy-in

Now that I think about it this is kind of a kink thing isn't it Assuming this position of dominance that would be patently ridiculous if the subject didn't openly agree to it, but once they do it's extremely powerful

There is a certain power in CYOA books, like visual novels, just getting the reader's buy-in by turning you from a reader to a "player", forcing you to accept full identification with a protagonist to engage at all Even when the level of agency (number of choices) is very low

I think it's really hard to do, but when an author pulls off 2nd person, the results are AMAZING. See: Jemisin's Fifth Season.

Recommend Complicity by Iain Banks if you’ve not read ‘S about a lefty journalist considering selling out & the killer (whose chapters are 2nd P present) who takes out the ppl his most earnest pieces attack. It’s v 90s? but holds up pretty well imo. Not enough lefty crime books

Present is harder to pull off, though. If the writer isn't up to it and doesn't have a good editor, it's painful (looking at you, Star Wars: Aftermath)
