Yeah, good point. There's something here where hurricane forecasting has gotten a lot better since the early 90s, and it would probably have avoided disaster.

I guess the 'investors' are a key detail too, because Hammond isn't self-financing this whole thing. But good lord, so many people are in on it by the point the movie starts, the fact that it's still secret starts to strain credulity as much as the dinosaurs.

The book goes in on this stuff about how a lot of people know about Jurassic Park but don't want to leak it to the public because their own plans depend on one-upping them, like the guy who hired Nedry

Yeah, but the book raises the implausibility level up another notch by establishing right at the start that compies are loose on the mainland.

Yeah and the prologue has a random construction worker dying from a raptor attack who manages to whisper the word "raptor" to the nurse right before he passes

And the doctor goes down this rabbit hole looking up the word "raptor" in Spanish thinking it means "kidnapper" and trying to uncover the conspiracy The company was really lucky that people were so bad at putting shit together

Hold on, who is simultaneously aware that "rapto" means kidnapping but unaware that "raptor" isn't commonly used for "kidnapper"? That seems... contrived. Oh, God, did Chrichton think that "Isla Nublar" was an actual Spanish name? He did, didn't he?

Well, it's a word for "kidnapper", if not a common one The doctor goes searching for it in the dictionary and finds it there, which isn't super unrealistic

Yeah, thing is raptor the dinosaur and raptor the old timey barely used word for kidnapper don't sound the same at at all. Syllable stress is very important in Spanish, so that's two separate reasons you wouldn't make that mistake.

Itś part of the reason I never put together the "Nublar" thing was a mangling of trying to derive a word from "nube". It'd have been "nublar", stressed in the "ar", but in all the movies they say "núblar", which just... isn't even close to being a word.

Yeah I'd call that them just being wrong I mean they're Anglo Americans but if the island actually existed in the real world and not just in a movie script then they'd all have heard the correct pronunciation lots of times before building the park

And, I can´t stress this enough, "nublar" isn't a real word. Well, it sort of is, but it's one of those verbs only nature can do, like rain or snow. You can't use it like that.
