Well the Ataris turned it into punks selling out (from "Deadhead sticker on a Cadillac" to "Black Flag sticker on a Cadillac") I still didn't care though

What would the modern version of this line be "I saw a Grimes sticker on a Tesla Model Y"

The original came out when I was in junior high, and my only point of reference was the baseball metaphor in the title Because I'm a goober, it took another 15 years before I realized it was not just about selling out, but growing into middle age.

Yeah see and the Ataris version wildly changes the meaning of the song to where it sounds a lot more like the guy is actually expecting to get back with the girl Just from the fact that it sounds a lot "younger" (Don Henley was 37 when he recorded the original, Kris Roe was 26)

I refuse to believe that is that the song is about. The line? Yes that line is very much a kind of weak callout. (Oh no a Deadhead owns a Caddy) but not the whole song

I mean, i think it's both, tbh? I really don't think it's an either/or -- i think it's a story about lost love AND about how the world crushes your dreams AND about how the counterculture sold out.

To my mind the best cover is still Bree Sharp's, though.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kWYVxjC15sg …

The absolute funniest thing about the Ataris doing a song about punks selling out is them writing "The Radio Still Sucks" for the "Short Music for Short People" comp...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jw7iYYVfPJY …

...and then turning around and rewriting and rerecording the lyrics (badly, frankly) so it could be used in the first batch of iTunes TV commericals.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RrSIhFDiTWk …
