It was a beautiful film, and I remember it fondly, but its message is that one can act with impunity if you’re feeling let down by life. And if you’re the film’s protagonist. Nobody else in the film can act with impunity.

Worth pointing out that Ball's original screenplay had a much darker ending where we see everything go to hell after Lester's death where Ricky gets framed for his murder and ends up on death row
