"History will judge" takes really piss me off for this reason Jackson was WAY more controversial when he was alive - when people moved heaven and earth in the 1824 election to try to prevent is presidency - than he was for a LONG time after he diedhttps://twitter.com/Lollardfish/status/1331229812611051520 …

After he died all that fear and anger about him unleashing a wave of populist tyranny across the nation - founding the Whig Party to just be "anti-Jacksonian" etc - went away They put his face on the $20 and whatnot

Isn’t Reagan a playable video game character in some call of duty now or something?

He's not playable, he's an NPC in cutscenes He's portrayed unironically as the stern but wise mentor figure commanding the troops

But yeah it's a pretty good example No way would young gamers in the actual 80s have accepted a portrayal like that

Not "seriously," but there wouldn't have been pushback about a "real" President being the good guy issuing orders in an army game. This was still Rambo/RockyIV era, generic-patriotism was still en vogue

I mean, this was followed by literal Gulf War Sims during the Bush I admin; and naming an a soldiers vs aliens jungle shooter "CONTRA" years earlier because Americans had come to associate the word with "guns in the jungle" but not with "Reagan crimes"

I always thought of Contra -- like Bad Dudes -- as a classic example of Japanese game developers being clueless about US culture

Yeah, every now and then a reductionist take on the popular culture of another society accidentally hits the nail on the head.
