TMNT has somehow outlived most of the serious stuff it was parodying

And... a surprising amount of quality control considering.

Like yeah the new movies are turds, but there’s so many successful takes in different mediums. I mean I can’t even think of the word arcade without TMNT popping up in my head.

I seriously think the 1990 movie was genre defining Like they had the gritty Mirage comics and the goofy 1987 cartoon to work with and they somehow combined the tone of both to a degree that the movie established a TMNT "canon" for all future generations

Joss Whedon was absolutely thinking of this movie when he wanted the middle act of Age of Ultron to have the Avengers moping around on a farm He didn't pull it off though, possibly due to executive interference

Like he absolutely got that the emotional heart of a franchise like this has to be that you can hang out with these guys and watch them shoot the shit aimlessly when there's no crime to fight The little pointless in-jokes and games and interactions that make up a family

Unfortunately the MCU was too big and important and the Avengers never gelled this way The party scene in AoU was Whedon's attempt to make this happen and imo it didn't stick

Raph convalescing in the bathtub and the way that’s handled when he wakes up is so wonderfully sincere.

AoU us trying. It's leaning *much* too hard on the pre-existing fanbase at the time assuming depth to relationships (widow/hawkeye, witch/vision) that aren't really there onscreen because they're in the comics and were presumed to eventually be seeded into the films

The sexual tension they put between Wanda and Vision when she only interacts with him as an unmoving corpse for the whole movie was a little bit weird!

She just stares longingly at him lying in the cradle thing because, I dunno, he's Paul Bettany and has good bone structure
