The Sue/Tommy/Carrie proto-polycule was very heartwarming but did stress my suspension of disbelief for a 1970s small town just a bit Then again I guess Carrie didn't really believe it either, which is why all that happened

I don't see it. In the novel, the students call Tommy 'a hell of a good shit,' and he seems to be aware that Carrie is fragile...he's downright conflicted that even with Sue's approval, what he's doing could hurt her. That's my take, he'd be too aware to go that far.
