Unfortunately this has turned into a politicized thing by which people judge each other ("knowing" that "chai tea" is "wrong" is a signal that you're worldlier, more educated and more culturally sensitive than someone who doesn't) It's all kind of a shitty situationhttps://twitter.com/Miandre/status/1330654453024755712 …

(Lapsing into tonal pronunciations when speaking an otherwise atonal language is legitimately jarring and confusing since it breaks up the flow of English's own subtle tonality by which a sentence flows More importantly, it comes off as "fobby", which in LA was very bad)

(There are a lot of disadvantages to being the only Asian person you know, but the thing about being in a large community of other immigrant families for the first time is it can in some ways be worse You find out all the things you were doing wrong)

It can be tough. I automatically pronounce the emphatic consonants in Arabic words like Tahina even when speaking English because I feel weird if I don't, but I also feel weird if I do.

I live next to them and never have I ever heard a Frenchmen pronounce a French word any different then french. If they say Paris they mean the Trojan lad. you could hold a gun to their head and they would rather get shot then say "Straßburg" instead of "Strasbuur"

I get the teensiest bit pissy when people prounouce "guillotine" gill-o-teen.

I've stopped caring about people pronouncing 'poutine' as "pooh-teen" (it's pronounced "pootsin" with a short "oo" sound, basically). My kids are pronouncing it the english way now (I'm french-speaker, they've grown up in english). We all know what it's about and it's not Vlad.

Probably because English speakers' reactions to obvious French vs Chinese accents are... not the same.
