My kid's elementary school, which was situated between middle class and "underserved" neighborhoods, did a Kids Kan can drive annually - and kids/classrooms won prizes for their contributions. it was truly unfair and pointed out inequalities.

It's because charity as it exists in capitalism isn't about helping people but rather about feeling good. Donating a thing FEELS like it's more involved, like it's more personal. But cash is better, yep.
