The whole badass macho thing with drinking neat whiskey and dark bitter ales and so forth acts like it's anti-classist but it's extremely classist Rich people have the money and leisure to appreciate a single-malt Scotch The drink of the proletariat is Mike's Hard Lemonadehttps://twitter.com/Tsilkani/status/1330610728584290306 …

I am reminded: thirty or so years back, in London's West End, a little grocery (in NY it would be a "bodega") with a display of "Thunderbird, an American classic ".

Thank you for this interesting thought. I looked it up and wino is early 20th century, which makes complete sense. I study colonial American whiskey — it was flipped then; Hamilton taxed whiskey because it was the drink of ordinary folks.

My dad liked vodka best because you couldn't smell it on his breath and it effectively has *no* taste. There's a reason they put the sale 375ml bottles near the cash register, it's for the alcoholics.

One of the reasons Rex Stout had Nero Wolfe be a beer drinker is that even then being picky about beer was considered sort of snobby & elitist.
