There's a reason the derogatory term for an alcoholic who is also indigent is "wino" and not "beero" or "whiskeyo" When you actually hit rock bottom you just want to chug a Thunderbird without even tasting it

Most "manly" stuff is upper class indulgence with "rugged" proletariat branding. I.E. Yeti coolers and the entire "beard industry".

Its very 'eat unseasoned meat because we can afford to have it fresh' like early European bourgeois cuisine

First time I ever enjoyed Scotch was when a friend took me to a bar that specialized in NYC. 1 oz pours for $10+ a piece. Yeah, that's definitely not accessible to most people. (that said, Tomatin is my big recommendation to newbies, and until recently I believe it was $30ish)

Before I left the UK in ‘05, Highland Park would definitely have been my recommendation for intro to scotch, but over here and now, I can’t justify the prices. Can’t remember if I tried Tomatin yet; I know I’ve seen it, might pick up a bottle next time I do.

also tbh the obnoxious male dom starter pack definitely includes a performative whiskey preference ,cigars, and like an overcooked use of the word "gentleman"

Flashing back to the night of a University of Cambridge bridge club dinner, drinking Macallan 15yo and smoking San Cristobals in the student chairman’s rooms in St John’s college, still in tuxes. Very prole, much working class [almost certainly at least one M-L in the room tho].
