i feel like there's something to be written about how two shows that inspired some of the most devoted fandoms also very explicitly and performatively hated--like, cruelly, mockingly hated--their own fandoms

I would actually strongly defend Supernatural over the queerbaiting issue over Sherlock, despite Supernatural clearly being a lower-quality show overall Sherlock had queerbaiting built into the premise from the pilot, Supernatural *very obviously* stumbled accidentally into it

The two big intense ships in Supernatural fandom are shipping the two main characters, WHO ARE BROTHERS FOR FUCK'S SAKE And shipping Dean with Castiel, a character who was very obviously introduced to be a brief side character

It has, in fact, been a really big problem for a really long time that the fans want Castiel to be a main character -- given that, as originally written, he's a fucking angel with all these angel powers and if you remember his powers exist they break the plot of every episode

Castiel lasting as long as he did was this totally accidental result of the intense SPN fanbase falling in love with Misha Collins' performance, was in most ways at odds with the plot, and the writers kept trying to "fix" this by killing him only to relent and bring him back

Like, they tried multiple times to give him a dignified death scene and write him off the show in a satisfying way only for fan outcry and the suits' desire for more ratings and money to force them to contrive a ridiculous way to bring him back

So the "baiting" isn't a nefarious long-term plot so much as it is something that was very blatantly thrust upon them Even if you don't really give the writers much of your sympathy you can at least see why they bristle so much over this issue

some showrunners are born to queerbait, some seek it out, and others have queerbaiting thrust upon them
