It feels... a LOT like a corny idea for a music video that's been disastrously extended into a corny idea for a feature film

Like it's a classic music video cliché, the weird dreamy character who doesn't speak observes some everyday scenario and translates it in their head into an elaborately choreographed dream sequence set to the song in their headphones

Which, you know, whatever, fine But she felt the need to turn this into a whole story and establish that the daydreaming is because of a serious disability and have the Black mentor character directly lecture us that "she sees the world in a different way" Major cringe

That's the part that made me think of tropic thunder the most. His exposition dump cracked me up.

It's like the story of Zhuangzi and the birds It's a speech that demands the listener pause for a beat, and then reply "How the fuck would YOU know"

I mean as someone who works in real life disability support the answer is: probably they don’t and they just made something up

There’s a lot in the way of arbitrarily establishing narratives about people’s desires and wants and not always a lot in the way of trying to actually discern them

Not long after I first started this job someone who was at the time the the like, communications director or whatever the title was gave a lecture in a training about the different tools she used and one of them was Facilitated Communication. If you don’t know the term google it

Yeah that's a whole horror show Wasn't there a wave of facilitators claiming their patients had used FC to consent to sex with them

God I didn’t know about that but I do know that there was a wave of kids separated from their families based on FC testimony about child abuse.

Ah yeah the one really big shocking story that destroyed the reputation of FC as a field was Anna Stubblefield in 2015 Rutgers professor found guilty of sexually assaulting a non-speaking man with cerebral palsy

The fucked up thing about it is it's a delusion on the part of the facilitator Like it absolutely fits the legal definition of premeditated sexual assault, and yet I do believe that she believed all the bullshit about the patient confessing his love to her and wanting to marry

And that she herself "fell in love" with this imagined personality projected onto him that mysteriously turned out to be her dream guy (as happened so often with facilitators in "relationships" with subjects) It's very depressing to think about
