The thing about science fiction "blasters" is that irl it'd be incredibly difficult to make a handheld energy weapon that works as well as a gun But then, sci-fi guns usually work just like real guns and not at all like lasers anyway So you can just pretend that's what they arehttps://twitter.com/JamesSACorey/status/1330075871152119808 …

Hurling bits of metal using an explosive is still pound for pound the most efficient way to create localized randomization in the targets complex matter. Guns just work. https://twitter.com/Bondosan007/status/1330074906780983296 …

The whole thing is that the things that would theoretically be advantages of an energy weapon also make the gun a lot less cool and cinematic, to typical audiences No recoil, no individual projectiles, no explosive BANG or click-click of a cycling mechanical action

The idea of holding a laser pointer on someone until they catch fire like a kid frying ants with a magnifying glass seems cool but watching someone do it doesn't look that cool

There’s a short story about a guy who gets his hands on a gun that fires a invisible silent vaporizing field and he gets eaten by a vast horde of animals because the weapon is so inconspicuous they don’t disperse

Yeah this was what the "Pirate vs. Ninja" meme was really about Is the ideal style of combat total stealth where you kill people undetected at will Or is it the exact opposite, making a whole lot of show and noise so you can force a surrender without killing anyone

The stereotypical pirate from a movie, which did have a lot of basis in reality, is dressing up in this colorful clothing and firing his guns in the air and flying a flag that straight up says "I'M A PIRATE" because, paradoxically, that makes the actual pillaging go way smoother

It's like how Star Wars fandom pointed out a Jedi lightsaber is the least stealthy weapon imaginable, and that's the whole point The Jedi Code says you need to show the bad guys your Jedi weapon, and give them a chance to surrender on that basis, before actually fighting
