The thing about science fiction "blasters" is that irl it'd be incredibly difficult to make a handheld energy weapon that works as well as a gun But then, sci-fi guns usually work just like real guns and not at all like lasers anyway So you can just pretend that's what they arehttps://twitter.com/JamesSACorey/status/1330075871152119808 …

Hurling bits of metal using an explosive is still pound for pound the most efficient way to create localized randomization in the targets complex matter. Guns just work. https://twitter.com/Bondosan007/status/1330074906780983296 …

The whole thing is that the things that would theoretically be advantages of an energy weapon also make the gun a lot less cool and cinematic, to typical audiences No recoil, no individual projectiles, no explosive BANG or click-click of a cycling mechanical action

The idea of holding a laser pointer on someone until they catch fire like a kid frying ants with a magnifying glass seems cool but watching someone do it doesn't look that cool

We keep changing the sophistication of the loading and firing mechanisms, but we've never found a better system for fucking people up than setting off a small bomb in a tube with a hunk of metal in front of it.

Insert mass effect "sir Isaac Newton is the deadliest son of a bitch in space" quote here. So shooting a hunk of metal really fast will probably remain the go to choice for a long time. We'll just ignore that at those kind of speeds things act... weird.

Advantages of blasters over projectiles: • You can color-code the energy bolts of the Good Guys and the Bad Guys • We can follow the path of the bolt and more clearly see who’s shooting, who’s hitting • Wounds that pour fire and smoke seem to be okay for a general audience?

I like Mass Effect's "we realized the same thing that makes ships go fast can also make bullets go fast, so we put eezo in your guns and now you punch holes with fields instead of explosions"
