Definitely, but I don't think that was a one or the other option, elevating both characters seems like a superior result to me.

I mean, Shuri is still there in both versions, but Shuri is not T'Challa: what makes her shine and what made T'Challa shine were very different things, I don't think they're interchangeable in that way.
