IIRC, he will get office space paid for in perpetuity though.

Honestly the obnoxious thing about the 1958 Former Presidents Act is that Eisenhower pushed it through because Harry Truman legitimately was fairly poor after his presidency and people felt bad

And that was by Truman's choice -- he turned down all kinds of job offers and paid gigs after he left office because he felt it would damage the "dignity of the office" There's a book about him and Bess taking a "post-presidential road trip" in 1953

It was considered somewhat scandalous at the time and would be seen as an unacceptable security risk today -- the recent ex-President and First Lady driving across the country in their own car, staying in motels, doing meet-and-greets at gas stations etc.

Still think it would be fairly safe today, if you could keep the president's whereabouts/movements secret. I think 99% of people out in the world are normal everyday people and wouldn't care (in a bad way) if the president stopped by.

Yeah well the current mindset of the US Secret Service is even with an ex-President, if "former President shot by drunk yahoo" makes headlines it'll be an unacceptable global humiliation for the country

To be perfectly honest, the past four years I think would make anyone reassess that position If Donald Trump is afraid of random drunks beating the shit out of him as soon as he leaves office, which he should be, he can pay for his own damn security
