Honestly the obnoxious thing about the 1958 Former Presidents Act is that Eisenhower pushed it through because Harry Truman legitimately was fairly poor after his presidency and people felt bad

And that was by Truman's choice -- he turned down all kinds of job offers and paid gigs after he left office because he felt it would damage the "dignity of the office" There's a book about him and Bess taking a "post-presidential road trip" in 1953

It was considered somewhat scandalous at the time and would be seen as an unacceptable security risk today -- the recent ex-President and First Lady driving across the country in their own car, staying in motels, doing meet-and-greets at gas stations etc.

The shitty thing about this is, of course, that fake President Gerald Ford completely and totally broke this tradition after he left office in 1977 He took every board position, speaking gig, consultancy, TV cameo, etc. they offered him Became a multimillionaire

And STILL got the taxpayer-funded Secret Service protection, pension, office space, travel budget, etc. He didn't just open up "ex-POTUS" as a blatant clout grift but a SUBSIDIZED clout grift

He pretty openly saw this as his actual "reward" for pardoning Nixon, since his actual time in office as President was beset by fierce opposition and he didn't actually get to exercise his power to do anything He was bought for a cheaper price

Anyway now all the ex-Presidents do it -- they write books and they start big foundations and whatnot, the Clinton financial machine put Ford's to shame, as did, frankly, Obama's But you know, don't hate the player I guess
