Interesting that you're presuming "French = secular." Many/most of the Muslims whose rights are being restricted by Macron's order are also French by birth & citizenship, aren't they? Or do you think they're less French for being religious & expressing their religion in public?

The "un-French-ness" of Muslim French citizens is the whole issue he's refusing to acknowledge Just like saying that Notre Dame's "Frenchness" outweighs its Christian-ness simply because the building is old

The idea of a definable French cultural or historic character that looms above any individual French citizen's personal religious/political/ethnic identity is, of course, the whole thing I am naming as the root of fascism

If French-ness has a specific meaning to you that's tied to France's long storied history before "your people came here" then, at the very least, your ideology is conservative and xenophobic, which is on the way to fascist

But if you take French culture going back millennia then it's super not secular. It is in fact explicitly Catholic. So either French culture goes back millennia, in which case claiming secularism is nonsense, or it doesn't, in which case it can mean Muslim as much as anything.

Cool, so we can make French culture one that includes Muslims as being part of Frenchness. Glad you agree.

You are literally engaging in idealism, you are arguing that there is a specific French "national character" or "culture" that there is value in defending This is the opposite of materialism or of class-based analysis
