I think a lot of people forget that while some diseases mutated out of being deadly, that's not the norm, there's a history of horrible diseases that just loop through the population over and over and over.

And that's before horrifying blips like English Sweating Sickness, where we don't know what it was, it would disappear for decades between outbreaks, and it would kill within hours of symptoms appearing. And then it just stopped showing up and we don't know why.
