So, I’ve only ever heard the 3 Days Grace cover. So I didn’t know that verse was someone else. But the “change your number” is the part that stuck out to me as “this guy is not the innocent one”

Oh yeah the cover muddles this up by having only one singer That's the thing, back in the day everyone said the genius thing about this song was letting the girl being complained about show up to tell her side, but only briefly before the guy cuts her off again

The key irony of the song is that he starts singing "But you didn't have to cut me off" as soon as she finishes her verse, *cutting her off*

It's kind of meta too, like Kimbra was a much younger artist known for upbeat R&B/pop music Her showing up on this moody sad track has this feeling of a generally happy person being dragged into an "ugh this shit again" situation by a clingy ex
