Interestingly one of the most famous duchesses in her own right in history, Eleanor of Aquitaine, was French, although I think that may be because the Duchy of Aquitaine was created prior to the establishment of Salic law

Under normal circumstances "Duchess" is *always* a courtesy title for a Duke's wife, *never* a title inherited in its own right by birth And so the "royal dukedoms" held by the monarch are customarily called "Duke" regardless, in recognition of this fact
