Wait were you just taking umbrage to the implication that caring about carpentry, specifically, is a waste of time?

Not umbrage, just trying to understand the intent? I get not being into the games, or the physical activities, but I donno why enjoying it is a sign of being a dick?

@Nymphomachy's read on this is defensive (or a counterattack) because we don't really live in a culturally neutral libertarian utopia where everyone can do as they will and live and let live2 replies 0 retweets 3 likes -

I have no interest in a libertarian utopia, sounds like hell. Nor am I saying that there are not social valuatiruins of both modes of operation. But the fact I love creating things with my hands to being joy to those around me doesn't make me a dick.

to be clear: I think carpentry is good; if I were in the position of getting to have nice things I would want furniture made by a carpenter I could look in the eye rather than $31 tupperware drawers from Walmart But I will never get to have something I will be able to hold on to

the idea of paying $500 for a handmade all-purpose cooking knife I can use for thirty years pass down to my children sounds really great, except that I can't have children and can barely have personal possessions and I probably won't be alive in *five* years

so it takes real gall when somebody gets in my face acting like I'm unworthy of comfort or happiness, or am a drain on theirs because I'm not simply AMASSING "nice simple things" I can't have, but not CREATING nice simple things , which is just such preposterous toxic worldview

I have been in the past angrily accused of seeing my life like I'm a "tourist in a hotel room", no concern for the future or for leaving anything behind And I mean... yeah, I'll cop to that too I want to enjoy what I have as long as I have it and then vanish, leaving no trace

Which may sound selfish but hey look -- from where I'm sitting most of the people who did leave a permanent mark on the world left a bad one "Not hurting people" is the highest aspiration a human being should really have, anything above that is gravy

What do I want them to say about me at my funeral? Ideally I'll outlive most of my peers, my juniors will have no reason to care about me, and there won't be a funeral

I want to be the last person alive who knows who I am when I die I want to be the end of the story, to take it all with me to the grave People say that like it's a sad thing but I find it something to aspire to
