Honestly even if you are in point of fact decorating a literal bedroom as your hobby I genuinely think you aren't any better, more valuable or even more "productive", and CERTAINLY not more mature, than somebody who's trying to steal tenth place in an any % speedrun of Zelda 2

But I would go so far as to say that "nesting" as a behavior is... generally a sign of being a dick If you're putting a lot more effort into your living space than everybody else it just might be because you tacitly desire to have more control over the space than everybody else

Well, is it bad to want to control a space? The question is if it's really yours to control, of course.

It's usually a form of encroachment on a shared space. It's domestic Columbusing. The idea that if you're putting the most attention into it, you get to become the arbiter of how everybody uses it, and thereby the arbiter of their lives.

This doesn't match with "building things my wife asks me to build to serve a functional purpose in my life". Like.. the thing you are describing is a thing sure, but it isn't all the same thing.

Because I am not taking over anyone else's space, I am building things that are useful, in collaboration with the other person in my life. The process of learning the skills and sharing in traditions of craft that go deep into our history as humans.

Wait were you just taking umbrage to the implication that caring about carpentry, specifically, is a waste of time?

Not umbrage, just trying to understand the intent? I get not being into the games, or the physical activities, but I donno why enjoying it is a sign of being a dick?

I think @Nymphomachy's read on this is defensive (or a counterattack) because we don't really live in a culturally neutral libertarian utopia where everyone can do as they will and live and let live

And I am fucking sorry that is the case. I started this whole thing out trying to understand what the hell was being said, because I didn't understand the context and wanted to. It still doesn't make me a dick just for making things? I am a programmer.. I make things. S'who I am

I have no interest in a libertarian utopia, sounds like hell. Nor am I saying that there are not social valuatiruins of both modes of operation. But the fact I love creating things with my hands to being joy to those around me doesn't make me a dick.

to be clear: I think carpentry is good; if I were in the position of getting to have nice things I would want furniture made by a carpenter I could look in the eye rather than $31 tupperware drawers from Walmart But I will never get to have something I will be able to hold on to
