Yeah, learning German made that part of English much clearer to me. The distinction between will/soll is still very much intact, while in English they've clearly drifted together in meaning.

And once you realise that the conjunctives are actually very regular in both languages: can/could, kann/könnte it's not nearly as bad as it seems.
