I honestly think that one of the big problems with a "civics education" as we understand it is that it's premised on the idea that the system as currently constituted is a good system and we have a duty to try to maintain it Based on basically no evidence

Every other democracy in the world has rewritten their constitution at least once. The US perpetuates many dangerous lies about itself, but the worship of its foundational moment as a spotless event that can't be replicated is perhaps the worst of them.

It's not that the Constitution can't be improved in principle. It's that we would be trying to do so in a country where 70 million people just looked at the last 4 years of Donald Trump and said "More of this, please." We could do better, but we could also do a lot worse.
