Tomorrow I’ll lose more followers by insulting the alkaline diet. Which is a great metaphor for EMDR. For people who can eat mostly legumes & vegetables, the alkaline diet is healthy, & will likely make you feel better than quick food. But it’s not the baking soda water. ...

It’s the feeling of control, and the variety of nutrients, maybe more stable blood sugar, fiber, and simply more water, so hydration. And optimism — this time it will work! Changing our environment does make us feel better. For a while. And then we revert to mean. ...

It’s not a coincidence that humans have a lot of dysfunctional behaviors around control — either too much or not enough. And that we trick ourselves into believing that willpower is all we need. Because we do get a high from novelty. But we also crash when the novelty fades.

*shrug* Okay but the thing about dieting is that while "fad diets" and "gimmick diets" obviously don't work, the thing they tell you to do instead -- "make sensible, long-term changes to your eating habits" -- also doesn't work, empirically Dieting in general doesn't work

Yes, the evidence points that way. There is also no magic code of precise consumption. (There is no magic. Dammit.) Therapy is Camp YouGottaWanna. You gotta wanna be kinder, be safer in your own skin, not be $N. You gotta wanna take your meds & work in pursuit of that goal.

Okay, well That's kind of my whole thing, like trying to look at the aggregate problem of the "obesity crisis" or the "suicide epidemic" or whatever from a distance If people don't wanna, or if their desire is consistently insufficient to make it stick, then there's no solution

It's kind of a circular thing, especially if, like me, you don't actually believe in free will and think of humans as meat machines If the machine was already capable of "deciding" to fix itself then it wasn't really broken You still don't have any way to actually fix anything

We’ll disagree, then. (I’m on the side of consciousness.) You’re welcome to the nihilism buffet. More for you!

I just mean that in practical terms that's what it is There are tons of people who are manifestly suffering a great deal in their personal lives because they're fat, who would really really like to not be fat, but are fat anyway

I mean yeah it's a behavioral issue, it's not that fat people magically create calories from nowhere, violating the first law of thermodynamics It's that you can really really want to not be fat anymore and "not want it enough" for your behavior to actually change

Because in real life behavioral change is almost impossible, unfortunately Like yeah I've known a handful of people who've lost weight and kept it off long-term (literally less than five) One of them had to resort to drastic physical measures (lap-band surgery)

... Rather than weight/diet (which was a metaphor), consider exvangelicals. That’s a massive cognitive and behavioral change. Or people who refuse to perpetuate the child abuse they learned.
