Tommy Atkins, the person, repeatedly submitted his eponymous mango variety for judging to the Florida Mango Forum only to have it rejected because they thought it was too low-quality to consider But his faith in his bad mango was ultimately rewarded with great commercial success

We keep seeing this principle play out over and over again, where the most popular iteration of any given commodity proves to be one of the ones most despised by people who actually care about said commodity And yet people still play coy about ithttps://twitter.com/LususNaturae0/status/1328169299035512833 …

I need to find a thread I saw from a food scientist who worked on developing blueberries for market. She noted that the blueberry selected for purchase was always always always the one that looked best (large, plump and juicy) and never ever ever the ones that tasted best.

You really don't have to call a Big Mac "the greatest sandwich in the world" or "an objectively good sandwich" solely on the basis of its popularity or cultural ubiquity Yes, all standards of success are fundamentally subjective but there's a general understanding here

Is the Toyota Corolla the greatest car of all time? It's certainly the best-selling. Maybe it's "the greatest" in some sense, but certainly not in ways that relate to the direct relationship between the consumer and the product

Side note, I'm not sure Toyota sedans are a great example for this, because those things last fucking forever. I drive a Corolla that's old enough to buy its own drinks and the damn thing still runs smooth as ever. Pretty sure that car is gonna outlive me.

Yeah we all know that commercial success is separate from what critics think about quality but there's some specific cases where commercial success is due to *perverse* factors that the typical consumer doesn't think of as "quality" That's not universally the case

The mango thing, for instance, is a result of the difficulties of transportating and selling mangoes If people could teleport then the Tommy Atkins would likely quickly lose its popularity That doesn't readily generalize to other things
