I do wonder about how Paris is the one city whose name we're "allowed" to mispronounce in English Like why is it okay to say the S in Paris but not call Bordeaux "bore-doaks", or call Lyon "lion"https://twitter.com/netflix/status/1326557538570002432 …

Friendly reminder Emily in Paris is supposed to be pronounced with a French accent so 'Emily' and 'Paris' rhyme

Same reason we don't call Novosibirsk "New Siberia," but call Moskva "Moscow" -- the great cities had their names translated and corrupted in foreign languages. The less great cities did not.

Moscow/Moskva is far worse than Paris/Paree, IMHO, but other bad ones: Copenhagen/København Warsaw/Warszawa Cologne/Köln Munich/München Prague/Praha And that's restricting myself to Europe.

Because it's the only city that English speakers talk about enough for it to have been anglicized

Also, historically, the British weren't big on being nice or polite to the French.

I think the exception mostly applies to capital cities. We also say moss-cow, which I'm pretty sure is not the Russian pronunciation.
