He can legally pardon himself. Doesn't have to be Pence. Thing is, it's only good for Federal crimes, and New York has him on plenty of State-level stuff.

The question of whether the President (or any executive) can pardon themselves is far from settled, although I had forgotten Trump did famously write an all-caps tweet asserting he had this authority

If *I* were a future President, I should simply pardon anyone who did anything they felt warranted to a President who pardoned himself for doing fascisms and other crimes. Anything at all. Or to any other fascists & criminals he'd pardoned. Pardons-R-Us it would be.
