That's the whole issue, like his whole character shtick is being wrapped up in the idea that he's rational, he's pragmatic, his politics are an expression of enlightened self-interest, and his parents' politics are bleeding-heart emotion-driven shallow sappiness

Fox has always been a pretty outspoken liberal even before his diagnosis so I think he just detested the character (I’m sure being associated with him early in his career didn’t help). Though by the time I saw the show in the early 90s I already knew him as Marty.

He’s actually really lucky/smart to have nailed such an iconic seminal era-defining role like Marty McFly right in the middle of playing this other much less likable character, it didn’t really define him at all in the end.
