I think Fox disliked Keaton more than the writers did because he had to deal with people mistaking him for the character all the time for a while Also becoming disabled and having Limbaugh mock his disability may have hardened him against "compassionate conservatism"

The best I can imagine Alex doing is becoming one of those right-leaning libertarians who occasionally grumbles about Republican government overreach, but always comes back into the fold for the tax cuts and deregulation.

Yeah unless something major happens to him to put him on a different path I see him as Obama '08, Romney '12, Johnson '16, no vote/writing in Reagan '20
