My weird thing about Family Ties is that the show looks and feels much older than Growing Pains despite the shows being pretty much the same age, and also that the central gimmick of the show is completely lost on you if you only know it from watching reruns and it feels generic

I’d say the charisma of the cast makes it work and I do like the hippies have a conservative kid hook only because it’s such a real-time example of what was actually happening culturally at the time.

Like one really obvious reason the hippies' kids might grow up thinking their parents' idealistic values were a joke is that the parents didn't really do that great a job putting those values into practice (praxis)
