Once Nicole was cast we had many conversations, and she was given absolute free reign to inform or change the character to make it more honest to that experience it just turned out that she didn't want to change anything from the script.

also that was written in there to make sure that I was opening up casting to include a spectrum of passing. My want for Laurel was "do I think they can carry a movie" and "can they believably be just out of highschool"

the agencies struggled, and I fear there is a dearth of, or at least was a dearth of, young trans actors signed to agencies who get these casting notices and send you their client lists.

I was sent a lot of non binary actors, which, for THIS particular thing I was trying to do, I dismissed. I wrote a Trans woman and I wanted a trans woman to play that role or nothing.

And our schedule/window to make the film was incredibly small, we had not the time or resources to hold a truly open casting call.

Also, even though BIT is an indie, getting your unknown client to be the lead of a 2mil indie is a big deal, so my casting director was also sent a flood of cis women who didn't disclose if they were and the agencies wouldn't tell you if they were or not. Which was frustrating

I even got into a shouting match with an agent who insisted that "it shouldn't matter it should be about the ACTOR" and it made me lose my mind. "well she identifies as queer so..." Jesus Christ it says TRANS WOMAN 18-25 what don't you understand?

Blood pressure soars just thinking about it.

Yeah it's like how they always submit at least one or two white people for roles clearly marked as PoC if they think they could "get away with it"

You can almost imagine them crossing their fingers and going "why not?"

Hiring Tony Shalhoub (who is Lebanese-American) to play Fred Kwan/Tech Sergeant Chan in GalaxyQuest was both an example of them actually doing this but also in the end making fun of it I'll allow it since it's Tony Shalhoub

Replying to @arthur_affect @BradMichaelElm1 and
Shalhoub said he tried to make a small private joke of Fred squinting whenever he notices people looking at him And that "Fred Kwan" is a stage name he was credited with as a series regular on GalaxyQuest in the 70s to keep this from the fans but now he's stuck living with it

I kind of love that. At the very least it seems aware of itself. Also that movie rules pretty hard.
