I don't have an opinion about Mary Wollstonecraft but after that whole kerfluffle with John Ashcroft hiding The Spirit of Justice with $8000 drapes because of an exposed breast I pretty much sideeye any hot take about female nudity in statuary as potentially crypto-puritanical

Yeah, my reaction wasn't, "Oh my God, she's nude!". It was, "Holy shit, that a hideous statue!"

Okay, looking into it more deeply, the sculptor clearly said that the sculpture isn't meant to realistically depict Wollstonecraft at all, and it's an abstract representation of "women's progress" ...The fact that this was unclear to so many people means this may be bad judgment

well, according to the artist's statement, the statue is not OF Wollstonecraft. It's of "everywoman" in some sense? It's a statue IN HONOR OF Wollstonecraft, and it's about women's everyday strength or some shit. It's really ugly and bad though, tits or no tits.
