2000 and 2016 were both massive failures yes People tried to argue in 2000 that it wasn't, it was a demonstration of the power of political compromise, but that didn't age well

oh, god 2000. That's the turning point. The moment the country accepted SCOTUS just stopping the counting of votes along party lines was the moment when things went off the rails.

Right, like when I say the "system failed" I don't just mean it picked an evil candidate - then I'd just check every year the conservative party won, obvi I mean it failed to do its job of providing a credible narrative legitimizing the results
