To be fair, the metaphor doesn't say anything about a fishing pole Teaching you to go back and forth with a net instead of sitting in one place with a baited line would in fact be the first step in "teaching you how to fish"

I guess the real issue with this metaphor is the amount of fish in one pond is, in fact, limited, and if you just go around teaching everyone to fish you'll just deplete the stocks and be back where you started

Cf. training people to get into a lucrative profession by "teaching them to code", thus flooding the job market with mediocre coders and driving down wages until the profession is no longer lucrative
