I doubt this would actually work, Nixon's resignation was this big unprecedented norms violation that left his successor under a (deserved) pall of being a "fake President"

Yeah I think biden should probably do this, it beats running him again at over 80 or giving Republicans the gift of an unnecessary dem primary.

It's pretty clear in people's profiles of his decision to run that even he agreed 2016 was his realistic last shot and he is objectively too old now But ran in 2020 anyway as the best chance to save the country (because no one else had the automatic cachet of being Obama's VP)

Which means that he may well think that his job, in fact, was just to win the election and then step aside for whatever proxy he brought into office under the protective aura of his VP glamour (Which, yes, turned out to be someone who dropped out of the primary before Iowa)

I guess one could argue that the logic of picking Kamala as VP, despite her having "auditioned" fairly badly in the primaries (even if only in terms of her campaign management) is that it functions as a dropkick of squeamish white ppl into the cool water of a WoC presidency

I really fear this is the only way we get a woman as president; there's something about particularly presidential campaigns that really seems to disadvantage them.

It may be that America is just at baseline more sexist than all the other countries that have had female prime ministers But it may *also* be that a US presidential campaign, with its extreme length and intensity compared to other countries' elections, amplifies that sexism

This two-year-long gauntlet where the media just stares at you constantly and writes down an extensive list of every possible reason someone might have dislike you or have a problem with you

You look at how Theresa May became PM in the UK, where it was just "David Cameron is leaving and he needs a replacement" And the "leadership election" was over in a month when all the other candidates dropped out

This kind of process just doesn't happen in the US, not for the presidency, and for all that Brits talk a big game about being more progressive it actually seems very doubtful someone like Theresa May could've made it through the equivalent of a US primary
