In theory, and given the inevitability with which the fixation on access journalism feeds the manufacturing of consent, it feels like the way for one party to hold the presidency forever is just to always resign 34 months into a four-year term and run the ascended VP as incumbent

you could run the first president again in a future election, just with a new running mate, and then as long as you were always daisy-chaining halfway competent politicians with sufficient charisma you could theoretically ride the incumbency wave to infinite presidencies

Well, you can make anything work if people let you, but as with Putin "castling" his way between the two positions of Premier and President so he could stay in power forever, this is mostly because of the cult of personality around the person and not the actual clever tactic
