I've seen people recommend JRRT to replace the British terven as a favorite fantasy writer and... huh? Do these people realize that in life he likely believed all queer people were subhumans bound for hell.

I mean, the one good thing about him is of course that he's dead but do people not know he was a devout Catholic and so bigoted that he hated unmarried women? Get real.

It's mainly that because he's dead his estate collecting royalties from his IP doesn't really have any material effect on present-day politics

Like I do think this is worth pointing out, the Wizarding World licensing agreement is fairly unique Back in the day when everyone liked JKR they talked about how "badass" it was that she had enough clout to negotiate ongoing royalties and a creative veto over *everything*

Like, sure, as with every other video game based on a big IP, JK Rowling didn't ever actually come into the office when they were making Hogwarts Legacy or have any direct contact with the people making it

But she gets a cut of every purchase -- WB, the primary license holder, gets a cut from everyone who makes any Harry Potter thing at all (in this case, Avalanche Games) and then at the end of the year WB has to give a cut of all that total revenue to JK Rowling

And even though JK Rowling doesn't get CCed on all the company emails about making Hogwarts Legacy, if there's anything she doesn't like about it she can get the game killed That's an incredible amount of power for one person to have in modern media

Compare, say, Tim Powers and Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides Tim Powers is a Republican, but that doesn't really matter, because he got his big lump sum from Disney, he's never getting any more money, and after sending the check they never talked to him again

(And this is someone who within the world of SF/F publishing has a lot of clout, making a really big cash deal to sell a novel that won a World Fantasy Award)

If Harry Potter were just an ordinary bestseller then the creator's politics wouldn't be that big a deal, but it's not an ordinary bestseller The success of the IP does in fact directly translate into this one woman's wealth and power
