Oh, ftr I’m a mere bystander too! I’m just invested in the wider discourse the same way Ellie is

Me as well, I have no interest in Supernatural (tried picking it up the year after Angel to scratch that itch, and it didn't and I never returned) The impression I get, to analogize this, is that this is like if Spike/Angel had been a serious ship people thought might happen?

Yeah basically but imagine if this were dragged out for literally ten years

And, like it's to a degree where the baiting arguably harmed the show in the other direction too Like they were never gonna make Dean and Castiel an official couple but the fact that all the fans wanted them to be meant they couldn't give them real love interests either

This is the whole big fandom paradox, where once the show developed a female-dominated fanbase with an outsized core of devoted slash shippers, that's why the show ended up getting all misogynist and killing off all its female love interests

Because the wackjob fans HATED anyone who "came in between" Sam, Dean and Castiel, even though the idea of Cas actually dating Dean was obviously out of reach and the idea of "Wincest" being canon was REALLY obviously not gonna happen

Hell they hated the actors' wives IN REAL LIFE for EXISTING and spoiling their fantasies They sent them death threats and shit, they've kind of gingerly opened up about it in interviews and how traumatizing it was

(In Jared Padalecki's case, he met his wife on the show, where she played a love interest for his character, so it was extra charged The fans were all celebrating that her character died on the show and then she married him irl and they were NOT pleased)

You know the really interesting thing about this -- The actual show Supernatural for the past several seasons has had very little in the way of romance for the main characters at all Because of this dynamic where they know people tuning in for the non-canon ships

It's actually striking what a chaste show latter-day Supernatural is, like it's basically PG-rated in terms of sex as opposed to violence When back when it started it was very much an edgy show with a lot of sex scenes and eye candy and whatnot

Scuttlebutt is that J&J didn't really want to do any making out with guest stars anymore because they were entering their 40s and married And a show in its twilight years like SPN usually sees the stars end up with a lot more clout than the writers

But I do think it's a fandom thing too Like you can see this shit start to shift when they created Anna Milton to be a love interest for Sam in S4 and they did this gratuitous sex scene in the Impala and were surprised to find a huge fan backlash calling it "disgusting"

Anna was designed to be this idealized love interest to appeal to straight male fans, both in terms of eye candy and how her character was written It really backfired
