I'm legit curious from anyone who's seen it: is it actually homophobic? Like "he died and went to hell" is from all I've heard in this franchise similar to Buffy, an invitation for a "let's go to Hell and get them out!" unless they qualify it with "no this is real death tho"https://twitter.com/VapourSnake/status/1324678999319040001 …

Like I don't know anything about these two characters but this seems to be inviting a plot where Dean invades Hell and says "I love you too" or something

I don't watch supernatural at all but I know enough via osmosis that I can pretty confidently say they've been queerbaiting for a phenomenal amount of time and I think the series is ending now?

As far as I'm aware, though, this is 'real death' for that character.

Yeah, after 15 years of being told that Gay shit will happen PROBABLY, EVENTUALLY, seeing it happen and then immediately having one of the characters go to Hell is like giving a starving man a sandwich and then revealing that it's poisoned as he's eating it.

I cannot stress enough, Queer Supernatural fans have been waiting FIFTEEN YEARS to have this queerbaiting go anywhere and then they do... THIS

Yeah, I'm not denying at all that that's sh*tty, I just don't love the fact that this is going to dredge up the whole BYG discourse just in time for next years TLoU season (which will almost certainly cover Riley's death)

Classic BYG is really about more than just the fact that a gay character dies, just like "Women in Refrigerators" doesn't just mean that a secondary female character dies

I honestly never expected society to hit peak BYG in 2020 because Supernatural confirmed their one (1) most popular gay ship and then, not even ONE MINUTE LATER, sent the character that admitted their feelings directly to one of the worst hell's in the series mythos.

Well, it's not a coincidence, it's literally that him coming out is the cause of his death He specifically comes out as a tactic to save Dean's life, because the curse on him says when he finally discovers true joy the Empty will be summoned to reclaim him

And when the portal opens he literally *heroically pushes Dean away from him* just as the bad guy bursts through the door and the portal sucks in Castiel and the bad guy and closes before it gets to Dean

It is literally this old 1950s style gay tragedy "No, it is MY fate to die for being gay YOU must leave me, and LIVE"

(Titanic was, in fact, taking this trope and turning it straight "Promise me you'll marry a wonderful man and have a lot of babies Promise me you'll never let go")
