The world is what it is because he couldn't pick one thing and stick to it, because he constantly tried to make everything be two things at once, because he kept trying to force things to act against their nature Making mess after mess after mess, the human soul being the worst

That's what's so compelling about the very worst hack writers, after all They bite off more they can chew They try to do justice to big ideas and fail horribly and by so doing they make something immortal because it's fundamentally broken and cries out to be fixed

There's a great moment in the final season when Fortuna, one of the last surviving pagan deities, initially scoffs when Sam and Dean say they've met the true Creator, and then when Dean goes "Yeah, he's this squirrelly little creep" Fortuna instantly believes him

(Even though that was obviously long before the white American dude Chuck Shurley existed Before he tried incarnating himself, God made the pagan gods to be the actual deities he couldn't be, to live up to what mortals expected from a creator)

Supernatural is in a way more memorable than Neil Gaiman because, as I just said, they are trying to do justice to these great big Neil Gaiman concepts but don't really know what they're doing and flail a lot

Gaiman has this quiet (not always deserved) confidence, like he's letting you in on a secret about the deep truths of the universe, little brush strokes that reveal grand truths This seems more like a paintball gun

Yeah, that's kind of what makes it so great Chuck isn't even as cool as Neil Gaiman, he's the guy from your undergrad creative writing workshop that wants really badly to be Neil Gaiman

My favorite SPN episode -- from before they finally made the decision that God was indeed a bad guy -- was the S11 episode "Don't Call Me Shurley", which introduced a lot of cool ideas that the rest of the season had no idea what to do with

But it's the one episode we get where we actually see the show mostly from Chuck's perspective Trying to get us to sympathize with this deadbeat dad who literally creates a bar to sit in and watch the end of the world on TV because he just refuses to take responsibility

Addressing all this fan shit about speculating whether Chuck was really God in a very blithe way People saying Chuck couldn't be God because Sam had the magic amulet that was supposed to glow in God's presence (and had never glowed in thousands of years)

Chuck just shrugs "Yeah, I turned it off I mean, I'm God Look, see, I can turn it back on" *snaps fingers, amulet glows bright as the sun*
