The episodes I saw elevated the artistic success of the work by taking the story outside the diegetic conceit of the genre and recontextualizing it as a metanarrative about the nature of the medium and the idea of a storyteller as a kind of petty autocrat abusing the innocent

Supernatural is in a way more memorable than Neil Gaiman because, as I just said, they are trying to do justice to these great big Neil Gaiman concepts but don't really know what they're doing and flail a lot

It's a dark version of what Pratchett did in Discworld, the Old Ones are beings who aren't gods and don't work like gods because they precede gods Azrael (the Death of Deaths) is one of them The Creator himself is another and is this puttering old man based on Pratchett himself

Having just re-read a bunch of Totem and Taboo, I'm really struck how much Freud is 100% wrong about reality and almost always right about fiction.
