I'm just really frustrated with what seems like a general insistence that *nobody* fucked up and that Democratic leaders cannot ever fail, only be failed by voters just stubbornly voting the wrong way

Yeah when it comes to moral responsibility everything is the fault of Donald Trump and the people who voted for him Fine You're supposed to be leaders, you're supposed to play defense and strategize in the face of hostile political forces, it's your entire fucking job

Imagine if the postmortem at a sports game went this "Stop yelling at me, okay? Why don't you blame the other team for us losing? They're the ones who kept on insisting on taking the ball from us and scoring points with it If they just didn't do that we'd be fine"

It's rational and pragmatic to scold voters for voting wrong and say that that's more effective than the basic tactical understanding of timing judicial retirements that all the previous justices held themselves to?

If anything, I think my issue with the argument here is that it's OVERLY rational and pragmatic. I'm much more capable of being persuaded that, despite all their political power, Supreme Court seats are still a job, each held by an individual with their own life.

Ginsburg's non-retirement is far more justifiable in terms of sentiment, emotion, and personal dignity, than in any kind of pragmatic calculation. Does that make it good or right? I'd still say no. But it's why I hestitate.

This is the actual argument people make and considering the sheer amount of power SCOTUS justices have and how rarefied a privilege it is and the incredible impact their whims and peccadilloes have on the entire rest of the world I don't give a single shit

The retrospectives on RBG talking about her decision to not retire all went in on this Talking about how struck she was by how fast Sandra Day O'Connor lost her spark after retiring, how she never came alive as when she was in her chambers, how her work was her only passion

I DON'T CARE Jesus Christ the world is going to hell in a handbasket and I'm supposed to be okay with that because some rich old lady didn't want to spend her golden years BORED

Yeah. It's all stuff that would have made me extremely grateful had she decided to retire, because it is, in fact, a personal sacrifice. But the stakes are so high, it's really hard to see it as a sacrifice anyone could refuse.
