Honestly the longer I think about it the harder it is not to be pissed at RBG for not retiring in 2013 Like the nicest thing you can say about her decision is she was wildly overoptimistic

To be fair, the filibuster on SCOTUS nominees was still in place, so there is some blame to assign to Harry Reid, who could have removed it but didn't (or didn't announce that he would, anyway). But RBG could always make her retirement conditional on a replacement.

I'm just really frustrated with what seems like a general insistence that *nobody* fucked up and that Democratic leaders cannot ever fail, only be failed by voters just stubbornly voting the wrong way

Yeah when it comes to moral responsibility everything is the fault of Donald Trump and the people who voted for him Fine You're supposed to be leaders, you're supposed to play defense and strategize in the face of hostile political forces, it's your entire fucking job

Imagine if the postmortem at a sports game went this "Stop yelling at me, okay? Why don't you blame the other team for us losing? They're the ones who kept on insisting on taking the ball from us and scoring points with it If they just didn't do that we'd be fine"

Sometimes you do get outplayed, but the point then is that you should do more of what the other team is doing, not be angry that they're doing it. If the parties were reversed in 2016, Democrats should never have given a GOP nominee a hearing either.

All of that is completely impossible to fix by any institutional means once the Republicans have permanent control of the Supreme Court
