To be fair, the filibuster on SCOTUS nominees was still in place, so there is some blame to assign to Harry Reid, who could have removed it but didn't (or didn't announce that he would, anyway). But RBG could always make her retirement conditional on a replacement.

I'm just really frustrated with what seems like a general insistence that *nobody* fucked up and that Democratic leaders cannot ever fail, only be failed by voters just stubbornly voting the wrong way

Yeah when it comes to moral responsibility everything is the fault of Donald Trump and the people who voted for him Fine You're supposed to be leaders, you're supposed to play defense and strategize in the face of hostile political forces, it's your entire fucking job

She also literally thought she was the only one who should be in the damn chair, though. She refused to retire out of ego.https://www.cnbc.com/2019/09/18/rbg-fires-back-against-critics-who-say-she-should-have-retired-under-obama.html …

Congrats on entirely missing the point. And she didn't always do her reading or pay attention to the world around her. She called Kaepernick's protests "dumb" without even knowing what the fuck it was about.https://www.vox.com/identities/2016/10/14/13289256/ruth-bader-ginsburg-kaepernick-harsh …

Democrats controlled the Senate in 2013, and if McConnell had tried to permanently block Ginsburg's replacement Democrats could've nuked the filibuster for SCOTUS confirmation the way they just had for the lower courts, and as McConnell did anyway four years later

If RBG had retired and the seat stayed vacant because Harry Reid didn't have the stones to nuke the filibuster and McConnell did, then the seat going to a Republican would be Harry Reid's fault But that's not what happened, and what actually did happen is Ginsburg's fault

And Ginsburg's description of her reasoning in this article is exactly the attitude that's so frustrating and that's shared by so many other liberals in high places Like it's all about her quality as a justice and that she shouldn't have to step aside for someone less good

Legal acumen is very important in a lawyer. They’ve got to figure out a sophisticated way to make a coherent case for a client even when that client has a losing hand. A judge on the other hand needs a completely different set of virtues!

Watching hagiography develop in real time is disconcerting. There is nothing wrong to note that an important, talented person done fucked up. It was clear in 2014 that Ginsburg should retire. She was fully aware of this and simple hubris seemed to keep her from retiring.
