The Republicans controlled the Senate then, too. What kind of nominee do you think Obama could have gotten? Also, this sounds a lot like blaming one woman when the reality is, we've got way more men to blame

The loudest calls for her to retire were in 2013, when the Democrats held a 55-seat majority that many people - correctly - were afraid they would lose in the 2014 midterms

I do not doubt that it's quite likely anyone Obama nominated in 2013 would be less skilled, less charismatic, and more politically moderate than Ginsburg However, they would 1) be a solid vote against overturning Roe v. Wade and 2) be very unlikely to suddenly die in 2020

I‘m not big on blaming a woman who was incredibly good at her job for not retiring rather than blaming the laziness of voters for letting Obama & the rest of us down for blowing off midterms. Also ahead of RBG in a blame line are those who ignored the known risk to SCOTUS in 16.

Actually, no You know what, I'm putting my foot down about this narrative It is fucking bullshit to say shit like this, like a leader isn't responsible for what happens if the voters let them down A leader who thinks like that has totally abdicated their responsibility

Republicans don't think like that Have you noticed? They're really really good about "election-proofing" their agenda By and large, their judges retire when they're told so they can make sure the seat stays red, because the important thing is locking in conservative rulings

Because the important thing is saving the unborn babies or keeping Jesus in schools or whatever They see the policy as the important thing, they keep their eye on the ball, and whether it's "disrespectful" to ask any individual judge to step aside before their time is secondary

Even with as narcissistic a shitshow as Team Trump was, there were tons of Republicans who put up with all the bullshit because "all that matters is the court", and it was a smart play and it WORKED

It worked because the other candidates who lost and the *voters* did not hold out for the purity shit after the choice was made. How can you simply ignore that?

There are millions of voters and the counterfactual of "What if people just generally voted differently" is a different matter than "What if Obama had been able to get RBG to set her fucking ego aside when he took her out to dinner that one time in 2013"

Yeah, sure, none of this would matter if the voters voted differently If the voters voted differently Mitch McConnell wouldn't even be in office There wouldn't be a Republican Party at all We could've had the ACA 60 years ago if voters voted differently What of it

Fascists and Racists want to be told what to do and Fox News does that. OANN dies that. Breitbart dies that. Fox News, etc. is their drug of choice. We have to be able to curb the lies. We have to. Fairness Doctrine? Something new? We must do this.
