Honestly the longer I think about it the harder it is not to be pissed at RBG for not retiring in 2013 Like the nicest thing you can say about her decision is she was wildly overoptimistic

The Republicans controlled the Senate then, too. What kind of nominee do you think Obama could have gotten? Also, this sounds a lot like blaming one woman when the reality is, we've got way more men to blame

The loudest calls for her to retire were in 2013, when the Democrats held a 55-seat majority that many people - correctly - were afraid they would lose in the 2014 midterms

I do not doubt that it's quite likely anyone Obama nominated in 2013 would be less skilled, less charismatic, and more politically moderate than Ginsburg However, they would 1) be a solid vote against overturning Roe v. Wade and 2) be very unlikely to suddenly die in 2020

I‘m not big on blaming a woman who was incredibly good at her job for not retiring rather than blaming the laziness of voters for letting Obama & the rest of us down for blowing off midterms. Also ahead of RBG in a blame line are those who ignored the known risk to SCOTUS in 16.

Actually, no You know what, I'm putting my foot down about this narrative It is fucking bullshit to say shit like this, like a leader isn't responsible for what happens if the voters let them down A leader who thinks like that has totally abdicated their responsibility

Republicans don't think like that Have you noticed? They're really really good about "election-proofing" their agenda By and large, their judges retire when they're told so they can make sure the seat stays red, because the important thing is locking in conservative rulings

Because the important thing is saving the unborn babies or keeping Jesus in schools or whatever They see the policy as the important thing, they keep their eye on the ball, and whether it's "disrespectful" to ask any individual judge to step aside before their time is secondary

Even with as narcissistic a shitshow as Team Trump was, there were tons of Republicans who put up with all the bullshit because "all that matters is the court", and it was a smart play and it WORKED

You say "Do you think Obama could've pushed through anyone as brilliant as RBG" I don't care The Republicans don't care They nominated a TERRIBLE justice with NO record who will obviously be issuing awful, nonsensical opinions that blatantly follow party lines

Because they don't care, because it doesn't matter, and they're RIGHT not to care The SCOTUS has become a partisan political arena where we fight tooth and nail to fill enough seats to kill the laws we hate and it doesn't matter if the opinions are written in crayon

Same for the USPS. Nancy Pelosi could have done literally ANYTHING to hold DeJoy to task, and her response was "Vote!" She facilitates the disenfranchisement, and then acts like she deserves her job and then feigns surprise at how terrible their vote margins are.

I guess this is a core philosophical difference The Republicans *actually care*, and what I mean by that is their view of democracy is "Once I'm elected I'm gonna do every goddamn thing I can to get what I want and if the voters don't like it they can try to stop me"
